cats & christmas

Our cats seriously love Christmas. The boxes. The lights. The sweaters. The treats we bribe them with to get in the sweaters.

Athena had a sweater, too. A red one. Getting her into it was the worst experience. She made awful noises and made out like we were killing her. It was all nonsense. We were so gentle. She won, however. Her nails are much sharper than mine.

Houston didn't get his entirely on but it sufficed. We got the picture and successfully created an White Elephant party gift. He's just so classy.

Every once in a while

They act like they like each other. So I had to take a picture to commemorate the moment. It's historic. That second one reminds me of this which makes sense because Houston thinks he's a god.
Aaaand just because they are so cute:

Yep, I love my cats. Weird, I know.

proud mama

A little obsessed.

Athena

Houston was showing Athena how to pose.
Today I thought, "Oh God, we're cat people."
I grew up with only dogs so this was quite the revelation. We got our new baby girl, Athena, last night. She is a beautiful black, 6 month old cat, with big round eyes. She is adorable and I can't stop following her around, and neither can Houston. Poor guy, he is just trying to figure her out and she won't let him get close enough to sniff her. She's a little unsure of Houston but she had no problem making herself at home on our bed about 20 minutes after we let her out of the carrier. Let's be honest, it is the most comfortable place in the apartment and cats have a high standard of living. Anyway, I love her and I think Houston might even be a little jealous. But I'm not choosing favorites, I swear.

got my motor running for a wild weekend

Today is fantastic, here's why:

-  I wore these shoes for the first time today and I think I really like them. I mean, walking in these heels wasn't like walking on clouds or anything but since I wasn't limping home barefoot with the shoes dangling from my fingertips I think we're going to call this a win. AND they were $10. Win.

-  We may or may not be getting another kitten this weekend. And by "may or may not" I mean we definitely are getting another kitten as long as we can find one -- even if that means I have to steal one from the loving arms of a child. I don't think it has to come to that though, I mean cats breed like... cats. But really, Houston needs a friend, because he's annoying lonely.

- I have resigned myself to the fact that I need a for real, live, with-a-teacher sewing class. Lucky for me, I found one. It starts in like 2 weeks. The sewing gods must really think I have a fabulous career ahead of me, that or they are getting tired of me calling my machine names when it doesn't work the way it's supposed to because I don't know how to operate it.

-  I got dressed today and I enjoyed it. Imagine me dancing around to "booty booty booty booty rockin' in a well" -- that's how much I enjoyed it. That's for all my friends, on stickam. love you like a bro and sis.

- It's FRIDAY. Dan and I have hot plans to watch Get Over It tonight while eating some hamburgers fresh from the barbeque. What a charmed life we lead.
(remind me to tell you how the title of my blog and Get Over It are in fact related)

cat mom.

Dress: Gap, Sweater: Anthropologie, Shoes: Payless
This hair-do just aged me ten years.
Since the fiasco, Houston doesn't come into my room in the mornings -- it's like walking into the room makes him relive the most traumatic moment of his life. Which wouldn't be too unfortunate if instead he didn't sit directly outside my bedroom door and meowed at me to pay attention to him. Every morning I get up and go straight to the bathroom (I hate morning breath), and every morning, the minute Houston sees me walk through the door, he starts meowing super fast and loud as if to say "Oh boy, don't worry, I know the precise location of the food in question. Folloooow me!" as he runs off in the direction of his food bowl assuming I am hot on his tail (pun intended) and equally excited about the prospect of food in his bowl. He always looks so dejected when, after realizing I did not in fact follow him fearlessly, he creeps into the bathroom to find me selfishly tending to my oral hygiene. Poor guy, I think I'm giving him a complex. Don't worry it's just practice, I told Dan that if we ever have kids, I'm giving each one of them a specific complex. I think they'll appreciate it, it'll make them feel special and unique.

Last day for the giveaway! Sign up -- it's free stuff :)

"I'll leave when I'm good and ready."
I don't know why I thought that particular Arrested Development quote seemed fitting for this entry but there it is. I just put it out there.
I'm trying to renact my "morning face" for you. You get the picture.
This morning I was all set to get up at six and go for a run. My phone alarm is Little Lion Man by Mumford and Sons and every morning when it goes off my cat, Houston, comes in, and nudges my hand to let me know he's hungry. He was doing just that when he got distracted by a basket under my night stand. It has a whole bunch of stuff in it including this small, metal easel that usually serves as a picture stand. His poor paw got caught in the metal chain on the bottom of the easel and he freaked out and dragged it to the other side of the room, shrieking. Oh my goodness. Traumatic. I jumped out of bed and tried to get him to hold still while I figured out what he was attached to. He finally got loose, jumped on me and clawed my arm and leg before he went jetting out of the room. I screamed, I'm probably a wuss but it hurt! So i just washed it up and crawled back into bed because no one should have to go running after such a distressing experience. Houston is fine, just a little shell-shocked.
So, instead of running I got up and made myself a well-rounded breakfast. I REALLY miss Dan and when we were dating (and in the same town) he came over to my parents house every morning and made me breakfast. I wasn't always a peach (I'm not really a morning person), and he is just so great. But, today I had to make breakfast for myself. Guess what!? I get to kiss him tomorrow! On the lips.

then there were three.

My adorably masculine feline, Houston, is coming home with me! Having very little experience traveling with animals I had to make a last minute appointment at the Vet for Houston to have an exam for a Certificate of Health. So yesterday I took him to a local pet hospital where he was duly traumatized. This cat does not like to be touched. He wants to be in the room and a part of the festivities but the minute you start to pet him he planning his escape. I was surprised to find that he becomes very needy when he is scared. His little body was shivering so hard in the exam room and would crawl up next to me and nudge my hand with his nose, willing me to carry him out of this room and never take him back. Unfortunately he was due for his vaccines and had to receive two shots -- he was not pleased and was pretty pouty afterwards. But he survived and he's going for his first plane ride tonight! In other news, I got a haircut from my beautiful friend Amanda and she gave me bangs! I love it! I can't stop looking in the mirror, always a good sign.
